Dangers of deep-frying turkeys

Deep-fried turkey is a southern favorite, but it can be a recipe for disaster. Here are some tips to prevent a fire, and to keep you and your family safe during the holiday.

1. Make sure your fryer is stable to avoid oil spills which would cause an instant fire.

2. Do not overfill the fryer with oil. Be sure to use an exact amount, because even the smallest amount of oil can cause a fire.

3. Use the fryer OUTSIDE and only outside. Stay clear of frying your bird in the garage, patio/deck, or kitchen.

4. Always stay by your bird’s side.

Grease Burns

Skin burns while cooking are extremely common, but in this case, if you happen to burn yourself while deep-frying your turkey here are some tips on how to treat your burn at home before coming to My Emergency Room 24/7.

We first and foremost would like to stress that BUTTER is not the answer! This old wives’ tale has caused more harm than good. Butter contains bacteria that can cause an infection to the injured area.  Instead use a cold damp cloth, or run cool water over the burned area to help ease the pain. If you have sterile gauze from your first aid kit, place this over the area and come to us, and will begin your treatment immediately.
